    Tried teflon tape and a squeeze tube of pipe tread sealant, not sure of the name. I still have a leak with trying both.

    It should work. Teflon tape is probably the best to use in this situation. See if you can use new PVC male fitting, like Schedule 80 PVC. Its threads are not as soft as Schedule 40 PVC.
