This is a movie from probably the 1970's or possibly 1980's. I only remember the last few scenes, it's sci-fi, and at the end of the movie the main character goes into a "cave" where there is a stone platform he lies down on as he passes the "torch of helping mankind" on to the last of their kind, and then the audience sees a very long line of these platforms where all the others have died and are resting. And there is only one more stone platform for the young man who has just been passed the torch.

I haven't seen it for "ages", and I would love to watch it again. It would be nice if my memory came up with the right movie for that image.
