Can we file joint fed returns and separate state?
I live and work in CA. My husband lives and works in FL. Can we file joint federal tax returns and I file state on my own since FL does not have state taxes?

Yes, that is permitted if your husband was a non-resident of California for the entire year of 2014.

That does NOT mean he can never come to California; it just means he cannot stand so long that California may consider him to be a resident.

Just to add - your husband must also not have any CA-source income. In other words no wages earned in CA, no capital gains on property sold there, etc.
