Went to the vet with my Doxie, took x-ray, said dog had overfull stomach, and also colon was full, Dog was active. Dog was getting slower walking up stairs. Then dog started to knuckle? Vet sid he had rupture disc in his back, and the dog was put down ths transpired witin days. I have othr Dacs. Please help I never want this to happen again.

Knuckling is in the legs. I see many dacs with this unqualifiable feature, meaning it is a feature not wanted when showing doxies. Of course the knuckling has nothing to do with a ruptured disc but I can see why this would cause irreparable damage and pain to a doxie as it ages. You don't say how old your doxie was by the way, that is important to know, but I assume the stomach and colon condition was a factor. So your dog had not been eliminating for a while ?

We cant tell you how this can be avoided other then play close attention to breeding standards from a breeder when you next purchase a doxie. The knuckling problem can probably be eliminated through successive litters.

You say you have other doxies; are you're a breeder ?

Doxies are known for their back issues, as are all long backed short legged dogs. Back issues can cause issues with pooing. A dog needs to squat to poo, and when the back hurts it's not comfortable to squat, so a dog may become constipated because of the pain.

If you're breeding you need to do genetic testing, and one of the things to look for in breed worthy dogs is back issues, issues with knuckling, etc. etc.

Sadly even with genetic testing, when it comes to Doxies, back issues is part of the breed. It just is what it is. But there are dogs that have less issues than others, and those are breed quality dogs.

Unfortunately SO many Daschunds have back issues. Even ones that come from great breeders can have it happen. The only way to really avoid it is to get a different breed, unfortunately.
