My partner is in prison currently and has 2.5 years left. Before he went in, I miscarried - as you can understand, I was gutted and heartbroken. I was wondering whether there was any laws/ways that we can obtain sperm from him, in order for me to get pregnant through a clinic?

Ask the warden of the prison. Rules vary from place to place.

Good question odinn. The way it's written it does sound like it's a matter of forcing him to give her sperm. But I'm betting that she's asking if there's a law that will prevent him from willingly giving her sperm for this purpose.

To the OP, you'd have to find out the laws where you live, and the rules of the jail he's in. Having said that, getting pregnant this way is not as simple as taking home a jar of sperm, getting a turkey baster and hoping for the best. I'm assuming that if the jail agrees, this would have to be done in a clinical matter, and that won't be cheap.

How long will he be in jail?

Why not wait until he gets out, make a baby the old fashioned way. Besides, if you get pregnant now he won't be around to help with your pregnancy, or the baby once it's born. Wouldn't he like to be there when the baby is born?

The only part of this question that doesn't appear to be covered is the technical question of how to send the sperm (assuming both parties wish to do this when he is still in prison). I doubt that it is as simple as putting his deposit in an envelope and mailing it to OP. She would have to check with a clinic about that (as well as getting permission from the prison). One or more "Conjugal visit" might be the better way to do this (assuming such visits are permitted in the prison at issue).

Not only permitted in the prison, but for the inmate. Conjugal visits are generally allowed only for those convicted of more minor crimes, usually not involving violence. They would be in a minimum security prison.

So, I would agree that the first place to ask is the prison's warden.

As others have noted, the method of transport will have to be discussed with a sperm bank or fertility specialist. On the other hand I will disagree somewhat with Alty. I may just be as simple as a turkey baster assuming the semen was transported properly. However, the odds of conception are not that great that way. But it is possible for that to work. The better option would be to have the semen shipped to a clinic that can then impregnate.

I don't think ScottGem and I really disagree at all here. I don't have any expertise at all regarding the technical aspect under discussion, and didn't attempt an expert opinion on that. I was merely making a "tongue-in-cheek" comment about "putting his deposit in an envelope and mailing it".
