What do I do when I tried to play a mpeg file, the program says"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." What can I do to play the file?

Try going to microsoft's site and searching for the current codecs for WMP. Codecs are instructions to a player to deal with different types of files.

    Hi,
    Have you tried this?
    Open Windows Media Player.
Then, at the top, click on Tools, then Options.
Click on the File Types tab at top.
Then, Left click on all the boxes, to put a checkmark by them.
    Click on Apply, and OK.

WMP should already have the codec to play mpeg files.
I am not sure the File Types tab will solve this problem, but it's worth a try.
    Best wishes,
    fredg
PS, You can also open WMP, click on Tools, Options, then click on the Player tab.
Then, put a checkmark by "download codes automatically".

If all else fails go to http://www.free-codecs.com and have a browse around. This site lists available codecs for just about every media player out there. You can download separate codecs,or complete packages which should be compatible with WMP,Real Player, and Apple Player.

    All the best,
    Nez.
