If you have two shut off valves for your washing machine hoses you should be able to shut the hot water off at the water heater and simply unscrew the old shutoff out and replace with a new shut off valve (called a boiler drain). If you need more info. let us know, OK?

As mark says you can close the water cold inlet shut off valve at the water heater that no water comes to the water heater then open the a hot faucet to drain the water or you can shut the water to house by closing the main water shut up valve to the house to remove and replace the wash machine shut off valve, good luck.
