Just wondering if a 12 step programme is a Christian thing, I suppose to go to one and the pamphlet I was given sound very churchy! Not really into the whole church, god thing so just wondering if it is.
It's not supposed to be, but can be turned into a religious-type program. The Higher Power can be God or gods or a mature adult you know or a parent or your cat or even yourself. It's supposed to be spiritual, not religious.
What's the difference between spiritual and religious I kind of thought they were like the same?
First there are dozens of 12 step programs, some are done by churches, and will be more Christian based.
But none of them are really Christian or require Christianity. Nor do they require going to church.
Most are based on an idea of a higher being, (I would say God) or a Intelligent Designer of Universe.
No spiritual and religious are not the same thing.
Ok thanks.
Many people that attend 12 step programs are anti-religious, for various reasons. Especially when they first go. You may the see the word "God" repeatedly. The original addicts that came up with the concept of the 12 steps of recovery just realized, at some point, that no matter what they tried, themselves, self will was not strong enough to do it all alone and that they had to believe in a power greater than themselves, in order to have a chance at a normal life.
Some people choose a doorknob, the group, a chair, a tree, a river, whatever gives you the strength to realize that YOU are not the greatest power to exist and that someone or something can help you through and help you improve your life, for yourself and for mankind, take responsibility & accountability for your actions and to make the choice to turn over the things you do not and cannot control.
Just be open to the ideas, be willing to look at things from a different perspective... see where it takes you, listen to the others... open your mind to the possibilities of a peaceful and happy future. If you give it a fair shot and if you still think it's all B.S. then carry on with what is working for you now.
A newcomer &/or young persons group would be a good place to start, In my opinion. Good Luck! I found hope and from there, I have been able to make progress... move forward and look forward to a brighter future...
