Firstly, I'm 17 years of age my birthday is March 21... so I'll be 18 in 4 months. I live in Georgia. Im on my third semester in college and I have a job. I was wondering if it was legal for me to move out before my 4th semester in college. I will be having a roommate which is my 20 year old boyfriend. He works full time.
No. In the US you cannot move out until you are 18.
As was stated... you wait until you are 18 then you can move out and FULLY support yourself. Your parents won't have to help you, give you a dime, or even let you back in the house when you find out things are not as easy as you think they will be.
Well you don't know the whole sitiuaton ik it won't be easy but my parents take my money out my bank account for my portion of the rent then I buy my own food have my own means of transportation... so basically I am supporting myself I jux don't get the freedom I need because I respect the fact that this is their house even though I pay part too and I have to respect their wishes...
Who pays for college, books, etc.?
You will be probibly the first 17 year old that actually does support themselves then... many think they do... but most don't bear the FULL burden that comes with it. WHen you are an adult.. you either make enough to pay everything you need or you do without, withouit food to pay the rent, without a place to live to pay for food... without medical care if you don't have money... A dollar on'y goes so far, and when you run out... you do without.
THat is usually a HUGE shock to anyone when they first move out of mom and dads place. And the hardest thing to do as it usually takes years to make enough to not just barely get by. Few, very few actually grasp how expensive living on your own ctually is because someone else is no longer paying for something or everything.
And very, very few 20 year olds earn enough to do much more than get by either. You aren't (or won't be ) making much more than minimum wage as nobody at that age has much work experience or job skills to be worth much more yet.
Wait until you turn 18, until then you legally CAN'T move. After you turn 18 nobody can stop you.

You are in college for pity's sake! Somehow you started young. You will be 18 in only 4 months.
My state and many states have statutes about police non-response to runaway children. My state allows the police to assess the situation and not look for anyone 17-18.
Tell your parents that you want to move and will be very responsible about the big thing they are worried about, sex and pregnancy. Be open about it. Be calm and informed.
No one has been rude to you. But I wonder if you really understand what is involved in supporting yourself. For example, what you pay in rent. Is that half of what an actual apartment would cost? What does your boyfriend pay and how much of it would you be expected to kick in? Do you eat nothing of what your parents buy? Do you have an idea of what health care will cost you?
You sound like a pretty strong and level headed 17 year old. And you are to be applauded for where you are now. But I'm just not sure you have researched enough.

You do sound very mature for your age, and you seem to have a solid plan in place. No doubt you will work hard to achieve your goals. Four months isn't that long to wait. Just to add... always have a plan B, as in what will you do if your relationship with your boyfriend doesn't last. It would be wise to always be able to support yourself. Relationships don't always last, you may not have the option to move back home. That goes for people of any age. Hopefully you will work at putting some money aside of your own for that purpose as you continue through college in hopes of obtaining a job that would provide you with enough income should you have to fully support yourself.
Your student loans require your parents to supply their tax information, guess what happens if parents will not help you with any information.
I will go against the flow on this one, and say that Georgia will not do anything about a 17 year old moving out. I had this happen personally. But at 17 in Georgia, you can not sign for a place to rent, you can not sign any contracts or anything.
If it is a family issue, at home, just wait till 18 and make it easier.
OP indicated that, fortunately, her health care expenses are currently minimal. But she should realize that health care insurance is now mandatory, whether she "needs" it or not.Quote:
