The committee, chaired by former Gov. David Paterson defended the scare tactic, calling it standard practice throughout the country. Which country is he referring to ? Venezuela ? The Dems are becoming the American Sandinista party ;especially here is NY where comrade Bill Di Blasio runs the town with the assist of defacto police commissioner Al Sharpton.

That's a real nice vote you got there. It'd be a shame if... something happened to it.

I couldn't image Tom that you are a voter who didn't turn out but I can understand that if there are strongly entrenched candidates you might not bother but what's the harm in telling the researchers how much you dislike the policies of each party and of course you have the right to tell them to POQ

What this is can be called attempting to intimidate the Democrat base to vote . Turnout tends to be lower in midterm elections . The Dems race card and "war on women " charges are not firing up the base . So they are resorting to threats against their own.

You see this is something you wouldn't see here, we have to vote or cop a fine from the government, its called a lazy voter tax but it means everyone gets involved in the process even if just for the donkey vote, sorry, that means something different here.

It is absurd that in a free country that people get fined for not voting . The abstaining from voting is a political statement itself .

A political statement, I think it is ignorance or abdication. How can you endorse a process where the population is not fully engaged as representative? Our politicians have to work very hard to win the votes because they know that if there is a protest vote it doesn't show up in abstanence but as a backlash at the polls. If you are on the register you must vote either attend the poll or a postal vote, the only way to avoid it is never to register. By voluntarally registering you acknowledge your responsibility to be part of the electoral process and your intention to take part. This is the responsibility of citizenship. Your system is like enlisting in the army, being given a gun and when called upon to fire it you claim you are a consciencous objector

not in the people's republic of NY . I went zero for every vote cast in every national state and local contest I was eligible to vote in.

However ,this was a wave election in Congress and in most State Guv contests . The Repubics could've done better if they ran with a unified national agenda.
I will now put more emphasis on putting their feet to the fire if they think they can now skate for the next 2 years . Yes I know the emperor can still veto everything that comes across his desk .....and he will try to do as much executive action as they let him get away with .
Still;starting the 1st of the year ;they should flood his desk with legislation that has been sitting on Harry Reid's desk collecting dust . I've already outlined some of the immediate things .
I'll add that they should immediately begin dismantling Obamacare piecemeal. Start with something simple that both sides can agree on like that ridiculous medical device tax.
Did you notice that while the elections were going on that the emperor secretly released many of the documents that Holder was keeping from Congress regarding 'Fast and Furious ' . The threat of Congress oversight with some teeth is something the emperor can no longer dismiss.

Not sure how all of that works Tom but thus far it would seem the Democrats still possess the ability to filibuster republican initiatives so the shoe might be on the other foot

Harry Reid already provided the "nuclear " remedy to that .or maybe the Repubics will pass any bill they want through the reconciliation process like the Dems did when they shoved Obamacare down our throats .

the people haven't spoken ? The Repubs have their biggest majority in the House in our lifetimes. They only lost 2 seats . Repubic Governor candidates blew away most of their competition. They now control the Governorship of 39 states I believe . Even Scott Walker who had the combined forces of the national public union sector and the national Democrat party prevailed . Even in the bluest states of Mass. Ill. and Maryland ,there will be Repubic Governors . Even in Va, where the Repubics ran a throw away sacrifical lamb ,the contest almost went their way. In Kansas ,the Dems couldn't even field a legit candidate for Senate .So they backed a trojan horse "independent " .
The GOP now controls 67 of the state governments around the country ( combined Assemblies and State Senates ) . They control 24 states, in which they hold the governor’s mansion and both chambers of the state legislature . The Dems have 6 .

I hear you Tom, and I think it was disgusting that dem turnout was so abysmal for whatever reason, but if the repubs squander the opportunity, well that's on them. LOL, but if the dems are as obstructionist as repubs have been, that would be just as disgusting to me.

An interesting result is that while there was a very strong lean to the right in Senate, House, and Gubernatorial races, the majority of referendums on the ballot veered more towards the liberal side, often by wide margins. An increase in the minimum wage was approved in all states that had it on the ballot, including such blue stalwarts as Arkansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. And efforts to limit abortion rights through "person-hood" ballot measures were universally defeated. And of course medical marijuana won in several states and in DC. To me this gives me hope - that perhaps the true middle-of-the-road member of the silent majority leans conservative fiscally but a bit liberal socially.

I think you may be right, most people look for fair outcomes, so big ticket items are conservative but the things that are close to home may be viewed differently. A year ago we had a similar electoral result, the left wing excesses were the cause of loss of government but the electorate still insisted that certain sections of the community were exempted from budget cuts. In recent times our outcomes have mirrored each other, so a time of conservative ascendency.

Some people forget it isn't about protecting the job creators but the job seekers and workers and harsh implementations of the law are often overturned

The Dems are so full of contradictions about labor. They know that the price of low skill labor is strictly supply and demand. In North Dakota the fast food worker is getting paid almost $20 /hr because of the labor supply issue due to the fracking boom. So what do the Dems do ? They throw the border wide open even if it has a negative impact on their low skilled constituency .

Then they try to make up for it by artificially inflating the wage scale . The funniest thing is that they constantly call job creators greedy at the same time they expect these greedy businesses to voluntarily absorb the cost of the labor rate increase without either raising prices ,or reducing their workforce .
This is what the CBO concluded about the effect of an increase in the national minimum wage earlier this year . It would increase the wages of 500,000 workers AND would cost 900,000 workers their jobs.

Not only that ;but it would be the young workforce that would be the most impacted .
USA Today reports that the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which increased the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 between 2007 and 2009, resulted in a 2.8 percentage point increase in youth (under age 25) unemployment. During the great recession youth unemployment increased by 11.2 percentage points, so the increase in the minimum wage can account for about 25 percent of that increase.
The harm done by minimum wage increases gets compounded for young workers because it prevents them from gaining experience, thus increasing their chances of being unemployed in the future. Taking this effect into account, the study finds that the minimum wage increases that occurred between 2007 and 2009 will ultimately generate a 0.8 percentage point increase in the overall unemployment rate for high school educated workers.

You know Tom forty years ago a relative after a trip to the US told me how workers were being paid $5 an hour, a good wage in those days, but I wonder how far you have progressed, not far it seems, you are on the side of capital who wants to keep the workers enslaved, because that is what low wages are, slavery. You guys are like those who put that sign on Dachau that was stolen recently, "Arbeit macht frei", keeping the myth alive. Don't you see there have been many productivity increases and workers should share in that after all their numbers have been reduced and are continually reduced, begging the question; If wages go up and numbers go down, were the numbers needed in the first place?

It is changed days, the reality is long term employment is passing away and youth may have to resign themselves to long periods of training in order to earn the right to be employed, and when they are employed they should earn a fair wage. Let's face it, no CEO is worth millions particularly when he pays workers a few dollars
