My son started complaining about a lump in back of his head that hurts. So I took him to the doctor to get tests done to see what it is. I was quite disappointed when the doctor told be that they could not do any tests. She said to keep an eye on it and if it starts growing, THEN they will test it. She said it could be a Lymph node. I was unsatisfied about her not doing nothing about this growth on my 12 year old sons head and especially it hurting him. So I took him to another doctor and he basically said the same thing. He also says it could be a lymph node and it could be a good thing because it fights off infections and so on. He said keep an eye on it too. He said to check back in 2 weeks and if it grows then they will give my son tests. Well, it has been 2 days and my son says that another one has grown right next to it! Does anyone know what this could be and what causes little pea size lumps to occur in back of the lower head? My son says it does not hurt much anymore. But I am very concerned and am thinking of taking him to the doctor again on Monday.

I was looking on the home page at unanswered questions and read "lump in back on my son's head", and the first thing that came to mind was lymph nodes. I remember when I was ten, eleven, twelve, I would the lymph nodes on the side of my neck would swell and were sensitive to touch. It seemed to be so common for me that sometimes my family would laugh because I would say ahhhh watch out for my lymph nodes!! My 18 month old had swollen glands in the back of his head, I was pretty sure he was okay because of my own experience but of course I asked my doctor about it and he said they were just his lymph nodes and he was probably fighting an infection. So I don't think you need to worry too much right now. That makes four doctors so they probably know what they are talking about. :)

My son used to get those all the time. The doctor would tell me that there was nothing to be concerned with and basically the same thing you have been told. He had them off and on all through his childhood with no ill effects or serious illness.

I would be completely comfortable with what the doctor's are telling you. I do think it was wise to get a second opinion, though. I am sure he'll be fine. I would also ask your son if he has any injuries... no matter how seemingly small... even an infected fingernail/toenail. If there is something you can deal with that or at least understand why it's happening.

Don't worry, it all sounds quite innocent and I think the doctor's have given you good advice.

I know this is a 100 years ago... but I thought I would say, cause I came across this looking for answers for my 15 year old son... what your son sounds like he has/had is lymph nodes. I get them occasionally and they are quite tender. I usually get them at the base of my skull from time to time.
My son however, has a lump that feels like a bone, so the Dr. made an appointment for an X-ray... it's not a bone... well 5 months ago, I had taken my son in cause he has been getting seriously light headed from standing up... to the point where everything goes black... he isn't unconscious or anything... and the Dr. back then said it was nothing... well I think the 2 are linked together. My son has an ultra sound in a month, and the Dr. says I should not worry... but I am sorry... how can I not? Dr.'s are retards~
