Hotpoint 40 gal gas water heater leak
I have a Hotpoint water heater, model number HG40T01AVG02. We have had the unit about 5 years now with no problems until today. There is water leaking from the top of the unit out of the top cover, leaking down the sides. What could be the problem?

Make sure water is not coming out the dielectric nipples first. Then you will need to get a flashlight and start looking around for a leak. Also make sure the supply pipe and valve are not leaking. 5 years is not that long, what is the warranty time period?

    Hi Preston

Yeah, like Ma0641 said, look for the obvious stuff, for sure, but my guess is that the water heater is defective and will need to be replaced. In most states, these water heaters are sold by Lowe's, so I would contact them and be sure to have the SERIAL number ready as that is how they can tell you if the unit is under warranty or not. I believe the unit you have there only has a 3 year tank warranty from the date of purchase, so it looks like you are out of luck in the warranty department, but please double check just in case I am mistaken, OK?

3 years? That's terrible! Must be a builders grade.
