80 GB Freecom external USB drive
    Good morning!

Here we go: although the power supply indicator is on and the output is OK (I've tested it) This external drive remains dead  No indicator light, nothing. I have, of course, checked and rechecked all connections. I also checked it on my wife's machine. It was working fine until this morning when I switched on. This has never happened before.

Please help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.

    All the best,

Is this a rather large usb drive? Or one of them small ones?

If it's a large device, then it has a 3.5 inch hard drive. You can remove it from the case, and install it as another drive on your PC. If the interface is SATA, you will need a computer with a SATA interface. Then you can run some disk checks directly on the drive.

If it's a 2.5 inch drive, then you would need a notebook ide to IDE adapter, to do the same thing.

Thank you for your answer and for your suggestions. The are greatly appreciated.
    I haven't got a clue whether it's a 3.5 or a 2.5
The link above will show you the drive which I bought in November 2004. (Sorry, it's in Spanish but it's the only one I could find.)

Ah, OK. So it is a 3.5 inch drive. This is the standard hard drive size used on desktop pcs. Laptops, uses the notebook drive which is 2.5 inches, which can also be used as external.

Assuming it is out of warranty, you should be able to open the case. Inside you will find a standard hard drive. Take out the drive, and mount in to an open IDE connector on your PC. You can do a search on how to install another hard drive, if your not sure.

This will give you direct access to the hard drive. If it is accessible as another drive letter, then the external case is probably no longer functioning. You can examine the enclosure, and see if there any visible damage, or simply buy another case.:)
