Hotpoint Oven Heating Element on Fire
I've used the self clean mode on my Hotpoint oven at least once a year in the past seven years. Today, I noticed sparks. I've never seen that before, but I don't sit there watching the process. This occurred approx 2 hours into the 4.5 hour process. It appears to have started at the back of the oven where the element is connected on the left side (facing in). It travelled the length of the element until I noticed it. I let it continue until I realized that the length of element the 'hot spot' had already traveled appears to be damaged. I shut off the cleaning mode then. I don't know if this was a normal part of the process; maybe an element cleaning mode? Anyhow, I'd appreciate any insight on this. I'm thinking I may be in the market for a new heating element once the oven cools down and I can put my hands on it. Thanks for posting.

What you describe with "hot spots" sounds like a heating element that has failed. Having seen a number of stovetop elements fail over the years that failed exactly like you describe. Oddly enough Also on a hotpoint, Though a much, much older one.

Yep. I had to replace the baking element. Found a how to video online and took care of it with my seven year old son's help.
