I can't turn thre gas on in my apartment because I have a huge bil,I need gas for hot water,my question is can I get a portable tankless water heater for my shower and sink

I've never seen a portable. And the electric ones need an electrician to hook up, and a plumber to install. THey will run up your electric bill as gas was actually cheaper to use most places. (assuming natural gas and not the more expensive propane). Nor are they really cheap up front. THeir savings over a tank type heater come over heating costs over a few years of use.

However, perhaps someone else that if they exist knows about them will answer.

If you installed a gas tankless you would have to run a vent and that' not portable. A better idea, in your case, would be a 110 volt tankless water heater. Check them out at Home Depot or Amozon.com. Good luck, Tom

With a huge gas bill now to pay, how will you pay for your huge electric bill?

In my opinion it will use more energy to keep a 40 gallon gas water heater up to temperature then it would a on demand tankless and by going electric he won' have to run a new vent, Win-win all the way around. Cheers, Tom

My point is they are having trouble paying for gas now and switching to electric gives them an electric bill in addition to a "huge bill" for gas.

PLUS the cost of buying this and installing it... which might exceed the cost of the bill they owe. Or at least be a big chunk of it.

Plus they said appartment.....appartments are usually rented, Condominiums are owned. Meaning I highly doubt they could have it installed legally even if they wanted.

This is the question I was asked and answered. All the OP wanted to know if it is possible. Should I have told him tat it wasn't possible? Or simply have told him to live with the huge gas bill? Let's look at it from your viewpoint. While he might incur a initial cost do you think a on demand tankless will use as much energy as it will take to heat a 40 gallon heater 24/7? I think it would be cheaper and more reasonable to work out something with the gas company. To even more complicate things, it is an apartment.
