    Passive Forces and Newton's Laws
How do you find the magnitude of the unknown force when, a 1.0N weight is hanging at rest from a frictionless pulley and string with negligible weight?

You need to have sum of forces = 0 in order for the weight to be motionless. So there must be a force somewhere that will counter-balance the 1 N weight.
