I took four home pregnancy they came back positive. I went to see my primary care doctor to confirm the pregnancy. My doctor did a urine and blood test on me and they both came back positive. I went to visit the ob doctor Thursday. They did a urine and blood as well and it came back negative. They also did a ultrasound and they said they didn't see anything. I haven't had a cycle since April 24, 2014. Can someone please tell me what could be going on with me.

Sometimes a positive will later be negative due to an early loss. How far apart were your blood tests performed?

It could be that you are very early in a pregnancy, even though your last cycle was in April, it is possible that you didn't actually become pregnant until more recently. Most often a blood test will pick up a pregnancy sooner than a urine test. However, do you recall if the blood test was quantitative test... giving you an actual level of hcg (the hormone associated with pregnancy), or a qualitative test that simply shows positive or negative?

Was the ultrasound transvaginal or abdominal? If very early, there may not be much to see, and an early pregnancy could be missed depending on the ultrasound used and even the technician. Did your doctor suggest repeating a test and ultrasound in a couple of weeks? That might be the way to go so that you can know for certain. Several false positives would be extremely unlikely under most circumstances.

My doctor did a quantitative blood test. I have my lab results. The blood tests were done almost a month apart. And no doctor didn't schedule me another ultrasound appointment. I am schedule to see another doctor Tuesday. I haven't had any signs of blood or cramps.

My first blood test was a 4.9 range. The test that was done Thursday they said the results were a 1.2.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound done

The 4.9 level would sometimes be considered boarderline for a positive pregnancy. Many doctors would not consider anything below 5 as a positive...and even at around that level they would often want to follow up with another blood test days later to confirm. If you had been early in a pregnancy at that time, the level should be substantially higher a month later.

When you did the urine tests, were they read within a few minutes after testing? Sometimes looking at them later than the time stated you might see what appears to be a faint positive, but it would be considered inaccurate if it doesn't come up within the time stated on the directions. Many of the urine tests are sensitive to about 20-25 hcg, so would need to be at least that level to get picked up.

Are you taking any sort of medication? There are a few meds that may effect pregnancy test results. Are you periods normally regular? See what is said when you go in on Tuesday.

My doctor took two urine tests. Then she did my blood. I have both of the urine that she did on me. The only meds I'm taking is prenatal vitamins. Can the baby be hiding which is causing this to go on?

I have always been on time with my periods. I have never missed them also. I have been pregnant once before which was 13 years ago. And I have never took a pregnancy test were I have gotten a positive result. It's got to be something.

Unfortunately, if you had been pregnant soon after your April period, a transvaginal ultrasound should have shown a pregnancy as you would have likely been about 6-8 weeks pregnant. There wouldn't be anywhere for baby to hide. At the very least a gestational sac should have been seen. Also, baby hiding wouldn't effect the hcg level. Again, it may have been a very early loss since the levels went down.

You had been pregnant 13 years ago... may I ask your age? It may be possible that perimenopause is starting. This could account for the irregular cycles and for the hcg level on a blood test. This may be something to bring up as a possibility when you see your doctor if further testing continues to show a negative pregnancy.

I'm 30 years old. When I had my ultrasound done they didn't tell me anything. All The tech said did you have a positive pregnancy test cause I don't see anything. She did it so fast. I couldn't see anything. If I would have lost the baby. I would have a some kind of signs right. Maybe like bleeding and cramps

I'm not by any means a medical professional, but one thought that came to mind is a possible ectopic pregnancy. Not sure how legit that thought is though, but multiple positives both at home and at the doctors office, only to have it be negative and no show of anything on an ultrasound a month later, with no bleeding to indicate a miscarriage, I'd ask if it could be ectopic.

It's just that your scenario reminds me very much of a friend of mine. She had multiple positives, multiple ultrasounds, they never found even a sak in any ultrasound. At three months she was literally unable to move, she was in excruciating pain. Rushed to the hospital only to find out her pregnancy was ectopic, and her fallopian tube burst.

Surgery removed the fallopian tube that burst, and the baby, and she was devastated. She was told she'd likely never have children. She has 4 now.

It's something I'd mention at your next doctors appointment, because an ultrasound looking for signs of pregnancy when a positive result has been had, does not check for ectopic pregnancy. Her hcg levels also went down after her multiple positives.

Please don't stress about this though. I know that's easy to say after what I posted. But I'm not a medical professional by any means. Just mentioning this in case that's what's going on. If it is, and it's caught early, you have nothing to fear. Sadly, if it is ectopic, saving the pregnancy isn't possible. But you can try again, and yes, I realize how unhelpful saying that is.

I hope it all works out, and I really really hope I'm wrong. But I do think you should talk to your doctor about it.

With an ectopic?

Not necessarily.

My friend didn't until she was 3 months along in her pregnancy, until the fetus was big enough for her to feel pain. By then it was bad, really bad.

She had no bleeding at all, even after her tube burst. Just pain, and like I said, that didn't happen until the fetus was big enough to cause pain because it wasn't in the right place.

Me, I'd ask for a regular ultrasound, after asking my doctor if it's possibly an ectopic pregnancy. If the baby is ectopic, a correct ultrasound should find it.

I hope not either, but normally you would still have a rise in your hcg level... instead of it going down to a non-pregnant level. The ultrasound should have picked up an ectopic as well by last Thursday, but do ask for it to be checked again.
Again, the blood test of 4.9 would usually not be considered pregnant.

30 would be young for a start of perimenopause, which can go on for years with fluctuations in hormones, but not unheard of. If not pregnant, other hormonal causes will be looked at.

So do I. And just to make things more positive:

I have a friend that has PCOD, has one fallopian tube, and many other issues. She was told she'd never have kids. She has three.

The third, she not only still had PCOD, and one fallopian tube, she was also on the pill, and her husband used a condom, and she got pregnant.

So if this doesn't end well, don't give up.

I also had a neighbor, a long time ago (I used to babysit for her) who went to 4 different doctors, all who told her she'd never have children naturally.

So her and her husband adopted two kids, both had major issues, alcoholic moms, ADHD, one that was Autistic. They wanted two, could afford two, and adopted two that they felt many people couldn't handle.

Well, a year after they adopted their youngest, she got pregnant. Her doctor was shocked, said it was a miracle.

So she had her third child, and was assured by her doctors that a tubal for her, or a vasectomy for her husband, wasn't necessary. This was a miracle, a one in a billion occurrence.

You guessed it. A year later she got pregnant again.

When the doctor told her this too was a miracle, she told him "I'm getting a tubal, and hubby is getting a vasectomy, because we have too many miracles". :)

I knew a couple who went through several years of various fertility treatments and it just wasn't happening for them. They were told that they couldn't have children and they accepted that. I met them eight years later... in one of my childbirth classes!

Met another couple who were told the same thing... they tried for a number of years and they decided to go forward with adoption instead. They were going to pick up their 6 month old daughter in China in several weeks when I met them in one of my early pregnancy classes... she was 12 weeks pregnant... :-)
