    F1 OPT Tax Allowances
    Hello everyone,

I recently started to work after a 1-yr master program and I wanted to know how to calculate my allowances and what taxes should I be paying:

    Citizenship: French
Just finished a 1-yr master program (August 2013 - May 2014) under an F-1 Visa
I started to work (full-time) in early June under an OPT Extension to F1 Visa in NY.

I read in particular that I'm exempt of FICA taxes: what document should I provide my employer for that? What exemptions/ how many allowances do I have on federal (w4)/state and city taxes?

    Thanks for all your answers,
    Aymen

You will be liable for federal and New York state income taxes.

If you work and live in New York City, as a F-1 visa holder, you are EXEMPT from NYC income tax even though you live in NYC.

You ARE exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes. Make this fact know to the payroll department of your employer. If they want proof, have them research pages 43-44 of IRS Pub 519.
