The trouble with Google is that the web is a vast repository of disinformation put up by crackpots, kooks, and somebody with something to sell. I have seen answers here somebody Googled up that could injure a dog.
Questions
1. Why do dogs like to sniff bum?
Partly for information. If this dog hasn't been eating the same thing the rest of the pack has, it may be an outsider. It also has to with pack rank. A higher ranking dog can sniff a lower one whenever it feels like it. A lower ranking one must sniff the upper ranking one when it shoves it bum in the others face.
2. What is that slime that keeps coming back on the bottom of my dog's water bowl?
I am not sure, likely at least partly dog slobber. My daughter's Lhasa/Min Pin hates having Lab slobber in the water dish.
3. Why do dogs get their tails and ears docked?
It has always been done that way. Maybe to protect the owners. Undocked Boxers' tails
Can be lethal weapons.
4. How many lassies were there really?
I think I read once 7. There may have been 7 more since then. It is interesting, I have read they were male, while Rin Tin Tin was played by females. Careful camera work may have helped. I never remember a scene where either was sprawled on their back for belly rub or even a nap. Shame on Timmy and Rusty.

They always join other dogs, or perhaps it is hurting their ears. We live in dread of one of our puppies joining in sometime when the minister's wife is singing a solo.

I don't think so. I never remember a blue eyed Lab or Golden. All, never, always, none, and other absolutes are dangerous words to use with dogs.

Aster was 11 at the time this picture was taken. She and her mother are the yellow Labs in the back. Notice how light there faces are. When they were as young as the black labs in the pictures, their faces were about the same color as the rest of them.

My puppies chew on the ones that fall off the trees in the back yard all the time, and never have a problem. My friend had a Lab that threw up after eating sticks. I avoid letting my dogs chew dried lumber because I have been warned it will cause splinters.

I was serious. Most dogs get white around the muzzle as they age which you can see on the 2 older ones. Blacks show it more. Some breeds fade all over. My friends' Golden faded terribly by the time he was 12. I wish he had been in the picture. He was beautiful when he was younger.
As for the ears, like I said, it has always been done with some breeds.
The tails and ears were docked in the breeds that used to be fighting dogs or war dogs. This was to make it harder for the opponent to grab onto. A floppy ear or long tail is easier to latch onto and create an injury. Also for hearding dogs, it prevented infection from cuts. Some people say that the ancient romans did it because they thought it would prevent rabies, but I'm not sure about that one. Now it is just done because it has always been done.
Also, we had a blonde lab with blue eyes born in one of our lab litters.. 3 chocolate brothers and a yellow sister.. I think it depends on the genetics more than Just the breed. I mean if somewhere in their line there were blue eyes, it will most likely pop up again.
Do dogs have hairballs and what should you do for them?
My Pekingnese have never had hairballs, but they get what I guess is hair up their respective noses and make an odd honking sound.
Dogs do lick and chew their coats but I have never seen one groom himself like a cat. Cats get the hairballs from grooming and can be treated with something as simple as cod liver oil.
It's also done on some hunting breeds to keep their tails from getting damaged by brush. And there are breeds that are subject to "glad tail" if not docked, where they can wind up breaking the tail or getting really bad lacerations on them if they bang them against things while wagging them. And part of the problem some of the breeds are running into is that the tails have always been docked in the breed, so that there has never been an incentive to breed for tails that don't get damaged easily, leaving you with a limited gene pool with some really bad tails in it if you want to start allowing undocked dogs into the breed.Quote:
