My sister is a registered nurse -RN.
She has been working at a nursing home for over 5yrs. Now.
She has been a nurse for many years. And, this is the first time
Anyone has asked her to do this. They told her every five years employees,
Need to get a security/background ck. They made an apt at a UPS store, for her
To do this. She was told if she did not go they would take her off the schedule till
She did. She went. And, they took hand prints and finger prints of each finger.
And, mug shots!! Make her feel like a criminal.
So now the UPS store has her prints and picture. And, this information is
To go to the nursing homes corporate office. She does not get a copy of anything.

She has never been in any trouble in her life. Only one speeding ticket. She is 55.
What do you think of this practice? Is this legal?

Yes it is legal. How did she ever get the job in the first place without a background check... or get her nursing license. Sounds like somehow she fell through the cracks for years and they are making sure they have the proper paperwork now.

No she wouldn't get copies... no the UPS store doesn't keep copies... they were just a convenient location that can take them and forward them to the proper agencies that do the background check. Its not rare either... how she made it 5 years without it I don't know... someone in HR wasn't doing their job until now.

My wife is a nurse and has to go through background checks frequently...it's part of the job.

When you go to the UPS store, that is usually where you are printed for FBI background checks. I went through this myself. No big deal and no, the UPS store doesn't keep that, it is electronically transferred to the FBI and they deal with the information.

I think you and your sister are just worrying about nothing...and if she really is clean like you say, then it is NOTHING that she is worried about.

This is very common practice. All of us nurses have to undergo periodic background checks. Apparently she has slipped through the cracks all these years.

I have my background check done every year before my annual review, however mine is done at our local police station as we don't have a UPS store in my town. But what your sister went through is very common practice these days.

It is normally done, every year... If they never hand fingerprints or photo, then it needed to be done. I can not believe she ever got her job without it.

But 80 percent of all fingerprinting is for employment or gun permits. And they are not mug shoots they are merely photos for ID

If she felt like a criminal, this is merely her problem, since this is common and normal

Chances are that it would be much more intimidating if she had to go to a police station to get prints taken. She should be thankful that private enterprises such as UPS now perform this service.

When I was a boy, probably 1960 or so, I needed to get fingerprints taken for a boy scout merit badge or something. I had to go to the federal jail to get my prints taken (it was in Alaska, which became a state in 1959, so we didn't yet have state jails I guess). I can still remember the prisoners waving at me from the windows. :)
