Tax Exemption for Dependent - query
    HI,

Iam Ravi Narayanan. I came here this year 1st of January 2007. My family is going to join me in the month of September.

For next year can file tax returns for my wife and kids. Can I put my family and 2 kids as depends. Based on this I need to change my W-4 FORM. I already put then as dependents is it correct or I need to modify my w-4 form.

    Thanks
    Ravi

    Ravi:

My answer depends on your visa status, which you failed to provide.

If you are F-1 or J-1, you can claim your wife and children as dependents as long as they did not have any U.S.-sourced income.

If you are H-1, you should file jointly with your wife and claim your children as dependents.
