I have a quarter sized abscess on top of my left hand, below my pinky. I have had it for a few days and while it isn't spreading, it isn't getting better either. Should I keep using warm compresses to bring it to a head or should I pay to see a doctor. Money is tight for me so if it is avoidable that would be great. However I don't want to wind up getting surgery.

Cut some other uneccessary expense and see the doctor. Health should have the priority over luxuries. And no matter how tight money is.....you can always find something thats not absolutely neccessary to reduce or eliminate.

I can't think of how you got an abscess on your hand; it may break with the compresses, but what do you do with it after when another infection gets in. Yes, go to a clinic, or your doctor and get it diagnosed and treated properly.
