Hello,

I am planning on purchasing a vacuum cleaner, but I am having a hard deciding which one to buy. I've read a lot of reviews regarding to Shark Vacuum and some from Dyson cleaners...

I have been saving up for about a month and have around $100.

Do any of you know from experience which one would be better?

You won't get anything Dyson for $100 unless it is a small handheld. What do you want? Walmart has high rated Hoovers for <$100

Shark and Dyson are both out if all you have is $100.

As far as which one is better...both are good. It depends on who you talk to. Some love Shark, some love Dyson.

Rainbow is the best I have used. Have had a Kirby, but it doesn't come close to being as good as a rainbow. Problem is they are very expensive. But you get what you pay for.

You'll have to shop around if all you have is $100. Dyson and Shark are both out of the running for that amount, unless you buy a used one.

I've seen reviews by Consumer reports that indicate Dyson isn't really all that good... and units costing 1/4 the price outperfomed it significantly.

The best solution is to read Consumer Reports and then check the local flea markets where you can get a $200 vacuum cleaner for around $10.00. Vacuum cleaners are an item that is sold often and the parts that get replaced are things like the belt which are only about $5-10.00. Just make a good deal and plug it in and test it first.

I don't know which brand is best, but my wife has had a Kirby, Electrolux, several of the more common brands, a Lindhaus and a Riccar. By far the Riccar has been the best of the bunch for endurance and overall performance, and it's made in the USA! Not as expensive as a Kirby, or Lindhaus, but you will spend some $$ depending on the model you get. Never owned a Dyson or Shark, but the housings and brushes are held together with plastic in the ones I have seen. Probably good but durable is question.

Kirby is a fantastic quality brand... they last for decades...so while you pay a lot, you get an incredibly long life. I'm 53 and I remember when my mother got her first Kirby (I was early in elementery school) and how long it lasted... the second one is still going strong. While I've been through over 5 different ones (Not Kirby brand) in less than 1/2 that time (wore them out).

I have a Dyson with the Ball and it is a fantastic machine, but pricey. My only dislike is that the canister doesn't have a lot of capacity so needs to be emptied often. I also have some older Sharks that were OK machines. But as the others have noted, for $100, you aren't' going to get near a Dyson. Sharks will get you more bang for your buck.
