I know that I should know this but I don't for some reason. What is a layer 2 switch/hub. I know that cisco prides themselves on having these and other companies. But, what is the difference between this and a regular switch?

Thanks NeedKarma I tried to look it up on Google but no matter how the search was worded I kept getting the same results but nothing helped. Again thanks for the reading I will have to read up on that.

All switches are essentially Layer 2. When switches are advertised as Layer 2 switches, they are referring to the Layer of the OSI model that switch operates at, i.e. how it processes the network traffic. It is possible to purchase Multilayer switches that work at Layers 2,3 & 4.

A Hub operates at Layer 1.

A Switch operates at Layer 2 (or possibly 3 or 4 depending on model).

A Router operate at Layer 3.

If you unfamiliar with the OSI model and the layers, do a search on the web, there should be plenty of info out there.
