    Power steering pump whine
My pump is whining on 1998 Jeep. My question is easy?? Can I rebuild it myself; do I need special tools; where do I order/get bearing? I like to think I can do a lot of things.

Replace it with a remanufactured one... you can't get parts to rebuild most power steering pumps... and there is a good reason why... there is usually a lot more involved than just slapping in parts. And some do need special tools even to get them apart.

I actually do have the tools to do almost anything to a vehicle at home that doesn't require access to a machine shop. I'd rebuild an alternator...but not a power steering pump.

After rebuilding or replacing the power steering pump, flush the system and refill with ATF+4. Every 25,000 miles, thereafter, just change the fluid in the power steering reservoir. Rebuild kits (bearings, seals, and O-rings) are available at AutoZone for around $17. Once you remove the pulley, you likely need a pair of retainer ring pliers to remove an internal circlip. It should be a fun project.

I'm gearing up to possibly rebuild a Saginaw Power Steering Gear for a 1985 GMC B6000 School Bus. The rebuild kit is $34 versus $400 for a remanufactured unit. I'm doing it for a non-profit organization, so the labor is free.
