I tried remove the ring counterclockwise but it would not budge.. what am I doing wrong?

If you are talking about that center chrome retainer piece then it isn't you, it's a horrible design. Make sure the water is shutoff (sorry, had to say that). Then, you can try wrapping some duct tape around the retainer piece and then use your hands to try to spin the piece off. If the chrome ring won't spin off with your hands you can try a pair of pliers if they are handy, but the best tool for this will be a STRAP WRENCH (see image)...duct tape makes it even better. Home depot or Lowes will have strap wrenches...purchase the one made with a CLOTH strap if possible.
