Ceiling Light Fixture and Wiring Configuration
I am trying to replace a single light bulb fixture with a fluorescent fixture. When I disconnected the old bulb I found there were two black wires that were connected together, two white wires that were connected directly to the bulb and a red wire connected to the bulb. When I pulled the switch I found a black and red wire coming off it. I believe this configuration is connected with an outlet too because when I disconnected the old bulb an outlet stopped working. My question is what wires do I connect to the fluorescent fixture? I tried connecting it just how I disconnected it from the bulb and that does not work. Thank you for your help!

Okay, did you also find a capped off white conductor at the switch?

What you describe sound more like a switch loop rather than a receptacle outlet feeding the switch.

If this is a loop, then the two black conductors at the ceiling outlet would be supply conductors. One conductor ill be the feed into the circuit. The other conductor would be the supply switch leg.

At the switch outlet, the black conductor will be the feed to the switch and the red conductor would be the return leg from the switch to the light.

    Don:

Thank you you for your help. Unfortunately I don't know anything about electrical circuits. What you said doesn't make much sense to me. What wires would I connect to the fixture?

The only wires you need to disconnect and reconnect are the wires to the fissure, Leave the black wires alone.

The new light would use the red from the switch to the black on the new light and the white in the ceiling box.

Please make absolutely that the circuit breaker is off before you stick your hands inside that box.
