    Puppies with Giardia
I recently adopted a puppy from the pound and have found out he has Giardia! We have taken him to the vet and received meds for him but he just won't eat. We are even feeding him orally with water (pedialite) has anyone fed their puppy oatmeal as he hasn't eaten in 4 days but is drinking lots of water.

    Thanks Michelle

Have you discussed this with the vet in the past 3 days? If not, call him immediately! In the meantime try tempting him with a little cooked rice with a tiny bit of boiled hamburger and or a wee bit of cooked chicken. Some puppies will even try a bit of banana or applesauce. You could also try a probiotic yogurt.

    Good luck!

Call the vet! In the meantime if the pup is drinking liquids than make some homemade chicken broth with a bit of brown rice.

I tend to be fairly casual about a dog going 2-3 days without eating, but the time comes to talk to the vet as already mentioned. See the ''My dog won't eat.'' section of the sticky, https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post254171 I start with the case of the sick dog that needs to see the vet. You do need to let the vet know about the extended not eating. Your puppy could be approaching the rare case of needing to tempt it with rich food.

Thank you for adopting the puppy. I hope the vet helps it over the initial problem and everything goes well. Read the rest of the sticky too. If you don't find the help you need for other things, post back anytime.

Michelle, you have received some very good advice here. As an FYI, it is an unfortunate, but all too often occurrence, that puppies contract giardia when housed with mulitple dogs, as in a pound or shelter. The good news is that it is an easily treatable condition and the medication he is on will get rid of it.

Pedialite is an excellent way to hydrate him and keep his electrolytes up. Try to feed him the foods people have suggested here. If he still doesn't respond to these tempting foods, please give the vet a call.
