Can use of urine infection medicines just before pregnency cause disability
As planned I am pregnant. My LMP was on 20/03/2014 and tested today. But unfortunately I met with urine infection last fifteen days back and I used Zenflox-uti medicine as prescribed by my consultant doctor. The doctor said me that if you are planning for a baby at present then it is not good to use such medicine and consuming such may cause to have a disabled child or else you will loose the pregnancy. So don't continue pregnancy.

As it is my second pregnancy and am 33 yrs old then I am in doubt whether I should continue pregnancy or not? Kindly advise........

You can't ask a question like this, of such delicacy, on line. We absolutely do not diagnose on AMHD. You must consult with your doctor, and if not satisfied with answers, get a second opinion.

By 'urine infection' I am assuming you mean a urinary tract infection, normally cured with a series of antibiotics; there is obviously something else going on with you and that is why your doctor advised not to continue the pregnancy. Please discuss this issue with your doctor.

    Hello aruna111,

I am wanting to clarify your post. Did you have a period start on 20/03/2014 and just received a positive result on a pregnancy test today? Was this a test at home or doctor's office? If at home, has it been confirmed by your doctor? When did you actually start taking the Zenflox and when did you stop using it?

If the pregnancy hasn't been confirmed yet, that would be the first step.

In regard to the medication: While it is still considered to be a category C antibiotic for pregnancy, which means risks were found with animals and no studies in humans were done, or studies in animals and humans are not available, there have been more recent limited studies done on the effects of Zenflox (Ofloxacin) in human pregnancy. These have shown that there is not necessarily a risk to baby and not a strong enough risk to warrant ending the pregnancy. Prior studies on animals did show a risk, but the level of medication used was also much higher than what would be used with humans.

In other words, it is not a definite situation as your doctor suggests. As tickle suggested, get another opinion from a doctor or midwife in your area. Ask them to show you the research on it.

Obviously, you and your partner will have to make the decisions that you are comfortable with; perhaps after speaking to another doctor and doing some research on your own. Personally, I would not end a pregnancy from a short use of a category C medication.

    Dear Sir

I am very very thankful at you for your reply to my query. Let me clarify you... my LMP was on 18/02/2014. And I used 1 strip of Zenflox for 10 days i.e. from 05/03/2014 to 15/03/2014. As we are planning for our second baby hence I tested pregnancy at home on 2/04/2014 and it was positive. When consulted to another doctor and told all the story he again tested and confirmed the pregnancy and suggested to continue pregnancy but go for ultrasound every trimester.

Kindly suggest me now whether I should go for continuous ultrasound as I have read somewhere that such action make baby unhealthy...

Repeated ultrasounds will not harm baby.
