My condo doesn't have a master water shutoff valve. My contractor said it is against code, so I'm making a request to my HOA, but I want to have the code citation so that I can include it in my request.

We have no idea where you live. Contact your local permitting office or have the plumber cite the reason.

I have 2 questions for you. How do you think we can supply such a citation without knowing where the condo is? Why didn't you just ask your contractor?

I'm going to take a guess here that it is not just your unit that doesn't have one. If that's the case, it means the HOA is going to have put one in EVERY unit. They may be able to sue the builder that originally built the complex (it is possible that the rules changed AFTER it was built). But in the meantime, they will have to assess every unit for the cost of installing one. Your fellow owners are going to love you for opening this can of worms.

If the building was built before the code change then the building is grandfathered in. There are many units here in New York that are that way.

If the unit was built after the code was instituted I would be more worried about other short cuts that may have been taken.

Check with your building dept to see if your building was built before code change.
