Earlier this week I went to the e.r twice due to heavy bleeding. After many tests and an ultrasound they discovered that I was not 12 weeks pregnant as I had been told by a different doctor. But actually they found out that I had never really been pregnant. The egg was never completely fertilized. I was told that I would have some heavy bleeding, but not only have I had that but also a lot of clotting. Is this normal? And how long will the bleeding last? I'm going on a week of non stop heavy bleeding. They also gave me an antibiotic to prevent an infection.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this. Were you given anything other than the antibiotic? How long the bleeding lasts from a miscarriage can be quite individual, for some several days or so, for others a few weeks. Generally, the amount of bleeding will start to decrease with time. See your doctor if you have any concerns about the amount if the bleeding continues. They may want to do a follow-up exam.

To add to what Doula has said, if you are soaking a pad in an hour or less, you need to seek immediate medical attention.
