Funny noise in park and neutral
I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute. Today when I switched it on it started making a noise similar to the noise it makes if you try and turn the key whilst it's already running. My husband checked it out and realized that the ignition starts at the keys 2nd click and not the usual 3rd click. I can still drive the car and it only makes this noise whilst in 'Neutral or Park gears'. Any suggestions?

    Thoughts:

. Replace the Transmission Range Sensor (Neutral Safety Switch). AutoZone Part No. F483, $42.99.

. Replace the ignition switch, if the problem persists.

It sounds to me like the starter has gotten stuck while engaged to the flywheel. Strange though it usually will make noise no matter which gear you're in...
