The furnace starts but before the blower kicks in there are very heavy fumes coming through the registers. Once the blower starts there are no more fumes. How do we fix this?

You need to contact a local professional & have the furnace checked,NOW. You could have a cracked heat exchanger which is very dangerous & possibly deadly. I would strongly suggest you do not use the furnace until such a check is done.
