I'm not even sure if my car is an escort wagon GT or LX. The year of the car is 97, but the transmission is a 96. What type of transmission fluid should I use? Please help :confused:

Mercon V. Be sure to drain and clean the pan, change the filter, and replace the Mercon V ATF every 30,000 miles.

I recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF, which is Mercon and Mercon V rated. You'll be glad you did. It's available at many WalMarts.
