Do I need to pay tax to register my car in another state?
    Hi everyone,

I recently bought a car in Kansas but I want to use my old Illinois license plates. What would I need to do? Register my car first in Kansas then register it in Illinois?

I tried to do some research and found out that I will need to pay taxes again to have it moved to Illinois? Kind of does not sound right.

I bought the car from a dealership. This is a new car not used.

    Thanks,

No need to pay taxes twice, nor to register it twice. I don't understand your problem, unless 'have it moved' means paying someone to drive it from Kansas to Illinois. A delivered new car is usually delivered on a tractor trailer. You put your old plate on it, contact your insurance co to change all the details, and go to your DMV to register it, in that order.

You register it in the state you live in.

You can't use Illinois plates unless you are living in Illinois. I'm assuming that you are.

Most states tax you when you first title a car there from out of state... Only they might not call it a sales tax... even if thats what it ammounts to... because you will either be paying a sales tax (if you bought it in that state) or this "other fee" if you bought it elsewhere or it was a gift but there won't be both.

I've seen that done in PA, MD, and VA.

The Motor Vehicle Administration or Department of motor Vehicles will determine how much and levy that fee when you first go to title and register it.

Did you inform the dealer who sold you the new car of your intention to title the car in Illinois? How did you drive the new car home? That is, what tag was placed on the new car? Or is it still in possession of the dealer?

State laws and procedures for these type transactions vary from state to state.
Dealers have the expertise in these matters. Make use of it.

Moved from CA to FLA had to pay taxes on my 98 Explorer for FLA! It's a rip off!
