I have an existing fluorescent fixture that is hard wired. I would like to add a switch, so when other lights on the same line are on, this one is off.

Find the hot lead to the light, turn off the power, cut that wire, connect the pull chain leads to that. Do not cut the neutral. Most will require a small hole drilled into the fixture to hold the switch.
