Thermostat stopped working (digital) took cover off and found only two black wires coming from wall and a looped red wire how do I fix it?

To which terminals were the wires connected? If the stat has batteries, have you tried replacing them with fresh alkaline batteries?

As Grady said it may be a dead battery. Change batteries once a year in January including smoke alarms and you should be good to go.
