Ticking could be a cut or piece missing in the serpentine belt. It could be a loose rocker arm, stuck lifter, possibly valve spring broken (usually has a bad miss too) . It increases with engine speed? Water pumps usually knock or rattle. Go to Harbor Freight and get an engine stethoscope, $5 or so, and start probing around. Can also use a long blade screwdriver.

Try changing the oil and filter, using 5W-30 full synthetic engine oil. I've seen this work on similar situations before.
