Have a troy built lawn tractor. When you connect the battery to the cable the tractor tries to start can't make it stop running unless you disconnect the battery

I don't know, but sounds as if the starter (key) is on. Put in the key, turn to off position, then reconnect battery, red to positive pole, black to negative pole on the battery. Could be the key is stuck on ?

The battery cable on the starter solenoid is touching the start wire OR more commonly the cables are on backwards.
