I replaced 3 receptacles in a room.when I turn the breaker back on, the light in the room stays on now and can not be turned off. One receptacle is joined to the light switch, but I replaced te wiring to exactly to what they were.. any suggestions?

Because one or more of the receptacles was switched, and they tied the light into that switch leg.
Was there a red wire somewhere? Or a white tied with a black?

We recently had this problem. I am not an electrician, but my father is and he discovered that the fixture prior to my new one operated a fixture requiring a 3-way switch (like a fan and light together). You'll need to open up the box again and make sure all wires are connected properly (ground, positive and negative, and the other). I hope someone with professional experience can help explain this properly. Good luck!

That's not a 3-way. A 3-way switch is one where there is a switch at two locations switching one (or more) lights.

In AC building wiring we do not refer to the hot and neutral as positive and negative. That is DC wiring terminology.

Thanks for clarifying, Stanfortyman. We did in fact have the same issue, so perhaps the light is wired to a light switch?

A separate switch?

Are you speaking of an over head light fixture or a lamp plugged into that receptacle?

Look at the old receptacle that you removed. You will probably find that the tab between the two hot screws was removed, separating the screws. Remove tab on the new receptacle.
