I am starting a family off with a dog... I'm about to get married and I'm 2 months pregnant and so when I get the dog I with have a very small child and I would like a lap dog who doesn't need to much exercise. I have a nice house big backyard. I would like a short haired dog that doesn't shed to much since I'm slightly allergic. My allergies aren't to bad since me last dog(a husky) just passed away. I'm with excon -- get a shelter dog. The shelter will know the dog's history and can advise you about any training he's had, tricks he knows, how well he gets on with people and other animals. And you don't want a puppy which means you will basically have TWO young'uns on your hands. Also, you will be saving a life!

I agree with the other posters. Other benefits of a shelter dog would be:
1. They can advise you on what dog will fit with your activity level.
2. They can also make sure you get a dog that is okay with children. Some dogs can not handle little people.
3. The dog will be vet checked, have all needles, be spayed or neutered.
4. You will be saving two lives. The dog you rescue and also you will be allowing another dog to stay at the shelter to wait for their furever home.
You can not just go by breed of dog as dogs of certain breeds can vary in personality. You also don't want a pup you need to train to go outside for the bathroom as it is a lot of work and takes time. You will not have the time with a baby to dedicate to that as you need your rest as well.

First, may I offer my condolences on your loss. It is never easy losing a furry family member.

I am going to have to disagree.

I think you need to wait until the child is older and you can test to see if the child is allergic to dogs. While allergies aren't inherited, a child who has one or both parents who are allergic may be more sensitive.

What you want in a dog is not feasible with a young baby/child. A lap dog is bred to want to be in your lap/arms and happy to be very close to you. They need your attention. Getting one who will immediately be set aside for a baby's needs is unfair to the animal.

I love shelter dogs, but this is not a case where I would immediately recommend one. Many do not know the background of the animals that have been surrendered to them. They will know the recent history of the animal and hopefully its temperament around children and other people and animals. However, they can be wrong. Many shelter dogs will also need more attention than what you will have available. While an older dog should have some training, it will need to be retrained for your household.

I highly suggest waiting until the child is able to understand 'Don't hit' before bringing a new dog into your family.

I agree with Cat. You're pregnant, this is no time to get a dog. I've been there, done that, and it worked out only because I'm not new to having a dog, and didn't need to ask what to get.

You did ask.

Your hands are going to be full with a new baby. That lap dog you want will quickly be pushed to the floor and yelled at because you have no time for it, and your new baby. A shelter dog will need more attention, they don't usually come from happy homes.

In my opinion it's the worst time to consider getting a dog.

Have your baby, wait a few years, teach your child how to be a good pet person, and then go to the shelter as a family and find your forever dog. Right now I think you just want a dog to baby until the real baby comes along.
