Trying to remember a French, Spanish or Italian movie I saw in late 80's or early 90'

As I recall the story line was very similar to "The Artist and the Model" by Fernando Trueba. The artist was a painter and the movie was in colour. Long and slow moving but a fascinating look into the process of an artist.
