I have well water with a rotten egg smell, from what I am told it could be the anode rod in the hot water heater. I don't have a hot water heater, we have a hot water boiler that is used to heat the house and the potable water, also is the water dangerous due to the smell.

Do you have sulphur water?

Rotten eggs = hydrogen sulfide. It's often created by bacteria in wells. It might be produced by salmonella bacteria! It's worth avoiding the water until you can get it checked out.

I have well water and had the same problem. The smell is caused by bacteria in the well. My county health department said this is common in wells and not harmful, it just smells like rotten eggs. A gallon of unscented chlorine laundry bleach dilluted with three or four gallons of water poured down the well will get rid of the smell. However, the smell will eventually return, and the bleach is not really good for the casing or pump. If you try this, do not use the water to wash clothes for several days as it may streak them. Better bet is to call a well company as they have products made specifically for this. They can also check out the well. I needed a new pump, and since the water table dropped it had to be installed deeper than the previous pump. That was 18 months ago and the water hasn't smelled since. The old pump appears to have been picking up surface bacteria.
