If your hair color is black or very dark, a permanent color will not make it reddish brown. You would need to lighten your hair first and then deposit the desired color. However, if you want to go a couple of shades lighter, you can use a higher peroxide developer.
Go to the beauty supply store and choose the hair color you want and a 20-volume peroxide developer in "equal parts". Mix the hair color and developer together and apply the mixture to your hair. This should bring you closer to your desired color.
