Ask Me Help Desk - Weird Situation

Weird Situation.

So at work I was talking to my boss about this other kid that works there. This kid at school would say I had the easier part of the job (I prep food and clean dishes at a pizza place, he works up front). This kid told me how my other boss kicked someone out of the store, so I had all these questions when I went to work yesterday. I also heard he was quitting so I asked my boss if it was true and since he speaks broken English he was like "Yeah", but I couldn't really tell if it was like a "Yes" or a "Oh yeah he is?". So I just told him I heard from my brother this kid was quitting. And at the time I swore it was my brother that told me that, I go home and ask to make sure and then I remember "Oh crap it was my friends at school actually!". I also asked my other boss about him kicking someone out of the store, my boss said this never happened. So this situation is a mix of me not understanding broken English, this kid probably stretching the truth or something, and me possibly getting a story wrong. I just wanted to let my bosses what was going on, I didn't really want to start any trouble, but by screwing up the story possibly I might look like a liar, I DON'T WANT THAT. This my first job and I don't want to screw it up. Any advice? Has something like this ever happened to anyone else?

Just to clarify, I also talked to my bosses about the whole me having the easier job thing as well.

Why would you have even told your boss you heard this about the other guy? Keep your mouth shut and do your job. Don't spread gossip and think before you speak.
What were you trying to do, get brownie points or something?

I was just asking my boss what was going on and what I was hearing, I didn't want to start any trouble I was just curious. No I had no intention of trashing this other person because we're friends, I just wanted to ask a couple questions.

Ditto. Your boss isn't your friend in the end. Stop the chit chat and especially no gossip. Gossip is anything you hear from someone else. And don't ask questions that are none of anyone's business either.

You say this is your first job, so take our answers to heart. None of this 'I was just asking.'

I had no intention of ridding this kid of his job, I'm NOT that much of jerk. I will stop but I want to know how to make this first and LAST occurrence right because obviously I've done something wrong in the eyes of you people. I didn't have any intention of doing this to someone, and you know my bosses are great class act people so I completely disagree with "your boss isn't your friend in the end."

I say let it slide. If you bring this up again, you are only keeping it in everyone's mind.

Bringing idol gossip or rumors about someone's personal outside business to the job, which is NOT the bosses business, is brown nosing, and kissing up, and makes you look like a back stabber. I might add that its NONE of your business either so keep a lid on it, and leave it alone. You can't fix what a loose lips, and lapse in judgment has done, but you may have to apologize to someone later.

Think longer before you act or speak.

I have a question, what if they bring this up to me, should I just be like "Hey guys, I got the story wrong, and I shouldn't have said anything and been more professional about this. I don't want you guys to look at this kid any differently because of what I said I heard." Or do you think since I already said it, that it won't matter what I say now?

But don't bring it up -- use that only if someone mentions your role in it.

Do not bring it up and keep it simple as Wondergirl said. As everyone said you should not have said anything. As far as you having the easier job, often people will say things like that in order to make themselves 'above' you in a sense. You have to just ignore when people say that their job, their house, their car, their this and their that is better or harder than yours.

Yup. I worked in public libraries for 30 years. People would tell me, "Oh, what an easy job. You get to read books all day long." And the children's librarians were told, "Oh, how fun. You get to play with toys and kids all day!"

NOT! We even had to plunge the toilets or fish out rolls of toilet paper kids would stuff into them.

Me and my ex got into an argument when I was cleaning hotel rooms. 15 per day. He said his roofing job was harder. I said cleaning up after 15 rooms where 2 had a birthday party, icing and pizza sauce ground in the rug, furniture overturned, etc... was harder than laying 20 square in the hot sun. I said at least you get to look up at that roof and say job well done! I look in the rooms and say 'another one I have to redo tomorrow!'
ALL in the perspective! Or lack of perspective.

I doubt they will bring it up. But they know now who talks too much. Leave it alone. If the kid says something to you, apologize. Otherwise mine your own business .

I am guessing your boss doesn't want to be involved in these waste of time conversations. I would also guess that your boss would like you to just do your job. So just do your job.
