    State withholding
I have a question on State withholding. When filling of my taxes forms on state for a new employer, What or how should I complete it with 3 dependants. The reason I'm asking is because my Check reflects no deductions for State, just federal. I just need to understand what I need to do so that I don't owe anything later.

    Sincerely,
    Kay

First, its not a good idea to piggyback your question on another thread. To avoid confusion I've moved your question to its own thread.

What you need to indicate as exemptions depends on you. The idea here is to try to estimate what your tax liability will be and plan so the amount you have withheld will be very close to what you will owe. If you over withhold, you will get a refund at tax time, but you are then loaning the government money interest free. If you under withhold, you could have to pay a penalty.

So what you do is look at previous year's returns. See what you paid in state (and fed) taxes, then work with your payroll department to see what they will withhold depending on the exemptions you choose.

You can claim 4 or less, just not more. I have a feeling you aren't seeing any withholding because you don't make a lot. Double check with personnel if you are worried, but I wouldn't be.
