So I have bin applying for jobs but just can't seem to get the one I like. At this point I just want a job. I'm with no experience but have bin taking responsibility and volunteering to helping my neighbors with their lawn, cleaning, and so on. This will be my first job. I am nervous like everyone else might be. I have filled out applications but don't have any work history and well can't think of references. So my question is the following. I just want to know when I should check up on the job and want to know what to say when I personally go to check on my status? Any pro tips?

How old are you? You want full time or part time?

You are right... in this economy you sometimes have to take what you can find rather than holding out for what you like. A job beats NO job.


Particularly lacking any work experience.

With an entry level job like thise... followups are going to be less likely do to the fact everyone that applies is likely to have the same chance as you with no experience.

If you didn't get called for an interview... consider it because they had more than enough better qualified people or you just didn't make the cut.

Most of the initial applicants are cut pretty quick and uncerimoniously and they won't be able to give a reason... or really want to take the time.

If you made it through the interview process... and everything seems to have gone well... how soon is a hard gues to make.. not knowing how many people there were interviewing and where on that list you were... like the beginning or end of it.

A lot of the ones I've seen they tend to make selections in a week or two after the final interview. And depending on the company... and bueracracy the offers go out days or weeks after that.

THe more experienced you are... the more likely they are to remember... and the more likely they are to offer up more than a form letter thanking you for applying but you didn't fit their current needs at this time.

And you are actually lucky if you even get one of those letters.

But I'd guess a week or two after the interview... you could but on an entry level first job... it might be a wasted effort. Again.. a lot depends on the type of job... trained monkey jobs are more useless to follow up on than specialist positions that are much more difficult to fill would be.

References are the neighbors.
Have someone spell check. You spell big words well, but keep spelling been 'bin.'
Call the prospective employer after about 5 business days to ask if they have had time to consider your application, because you REALLY want to work for that company ONLY (even if you say that to 10 companies).

I'm guessing you are a teen, maybe a recent high school grad.

Hospitals need transporters (people to move patients on carts and in wheelchairs to get MRIs and scans, etc), libraries need people to shelve books and do other jobs the main desk staff don't have time for, retirement communities need wait staff for their cafes and restaurant areas. Try for part time (or even volunteer) to get your foot in the door, prove yourself to be a good and reliable worker, and when a full-time job pops up, you will hear about it and can apply.
