What exactly are you calling a "3 prong generator"?
Are you wanting to plug a range into a generator? If so it would have to be one big portable generator, so this isn't exactly a simple solution.

Just check the receptacle to see if the power is correct and go from there.

Well, 240 and 220 are only a small part of things. The amperage is more important. To plug it in properly you will need a 50A circuit. Only a really big portable generator will have a receptacle that big. In the area of 12-15kW. How big is the generator you have?

Where will the range be used? If in a new installation you'll need a 4-prong receptacle and cord.

    Pattijane,

All you want to do is test the stove? Can we star by finding out why the stove is sitting in the garage in the first place.

The easiest thing would be to replace the 3 wire cable with a 4 wire cable. Then disconnect the Neutral to Frame connection at the stove.

Even with that done, where are you going to make the connection? At your service panel?
