You need to stop them at the source. Finding out what and where that source is has always been the hard part of mite control.

The steps in eliminating the source:

    1. Identify what species of mite you are dealing with. Bird mites have different habitats than dust mites or chiggers.

    2. With a species I.D. you can look for the mites' habitat, such as bird's nests and gutters for bird mites or duct work and attics for dust mites or tall brush for chiggers.

    3. With the knowledge of where to go, you can begin eliminating the source mechanically, clearing and cleaning and vacuuming.

With the source eliminated, deep cleaning your living areas will do much more to eliminate the remaining mites than any amount of sprays. As you have already discovered, insecticides don't work very well on acarids.
