    Shower cartridge removal
I have a Moen shower. I need to replace the cartridge, but I cannot get to the pin because a plastic white disc surrounds the cartridge and does not allow me to raise the pin head. Can't find anything on the net about this white disc. How do I get that disc out and get to the pin? I have a picture if that helps. Thank you so much!

Pin is on top behind white disc. We think the white disc's function is to hold screws for the metal plate. Can we cut out a space above the pin so we can remove the pin?

White disc should have been removed before installation of shower wall. It is there as an installation tool, used as a guide of where to cut the hole and how large. Should be held in place with a couple screws. See if you can remove screws and then break or cut out disc.

    Hello Bestybop,

I agree with Hkstroud the white disc is just guide, I had the same issue last week just cut it out and removed it, see the attach images once you remove the guide, remove the clip and remove the cartridge if it hard you may need the removal tool see the image below, good luck.

The white disc may be a spacer that sets the valve at the correct depth for installation with thin walled tub / shower surrounds. You can cut away a small piece of it, as needed, to remove the valves cartridge clip. The white disc provides support for the valve body and fiberglass as the escutcheon is tightened in place with screws...

This worked! Thanks! BUT... new problem... after replacing the cartridge, it now has a steady small stream. We got a new cartridge (thinking perhaps that was defective) but to no avail. Still streams. Used the gel and everything. Any ideas? We have the water shut off to save on the bill...

Well I hope you got a free cartridge from Moen. I don't think anyone told you. Moen warrants their products for life. So do many other brands. You just call 1 800-BUY-MOEN, tell them what you have and they send you a new cartridge.

You must have a piece of trash in the valve. Remove the cartridge again. Turn on the water briefly (hot and cold) to flush out the valve. Then reinstall the cartridge. Reinstall in the open position too let the air trapped in the valve escape. Makes seating the cartridge easier.

Well, we knew about the free catridge. BUT this was the original to the house when we built 10 yrs ago and no receipt. Man at Lowe's said they won't reimburse us, just send a new one with a receipt. So we just bought the replacement. We did remove it and flush out the lines... twice we did that. Last night we turned off the water and left a bowl to see what gathers. It did eventually stop streaming, then dripping and left a very small amount after that. Will open the water lines this morning to see what happens. But you're thinking valve replacement? Is that DIY or pro job?

No, not thinking of valve replacement. Man at Lowe's wrong. You just call and say I have, I live at, I need. No receipt needed.

Is the leaking water hot, cold or warm? Try flushing again. Look at cartridge and look for scratches in seals and "O" rings. Shine flashlight in valve and look for scratches.

Is this leaking or streaming the original reason for replacement?

    Post back.

Hi... we did know about the Moen warranty, however this house was built 10 yrs ago and didn't keep receipt :( Lowe's man said they won't reimburse either, so we just bought a new one.
Now, we have installed 2 new cartridges, flushed etc, and still it streams out. We turned off the water last night and that was fine, just a few drips then done. This morning when we turned it back on, streaming started again. Not sure what to do. Oh, and the reason we started this whole process was because we had no hot water. That is fixed with the new cartridge, but now the streaming has started. And it is streaming hot water... go figure. Ideas?

We have researched installing a new valve (if that is the case) and it looks beyond our DIY skills.

Called Moen... yes they replace (misinformed Lowe's man... ) and will be here in a week. Hoping that will do it.

What happened to the "O" that was on the bottom of the original cartridge? Could it still be in the valve?
Replacement cartridge has a black spot on the cartridge up near the brass stem. Is that something in photo or is it really there. Is replacement cartridge a Moen brand or some other after market brand?

Both did not have an "O" ring. I, too, mentioned this to my husband, and he said when he took out the original, there wasn't one there, and the replacement (Moen brand) we bought at Lowe's didn't have one either. Will see what Moen sends us... if it has the ring or not.

Must be shadow on replacement photo. No reason for cartridge to leak unless trash in valve or scratch on interior walls of valve. I assume you are getting the cartridge seated properly and the retaining clip slips in easily .
